Thailand-Cambodia Border Status: Land-Crossing Checks and Flight Workarounds

TL;DR: For a near-term trip between Thailand and Cambodia, plan around flights rather than turning up at a land checkpoint hoping to cross. For Phnom Penh, start with Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)–Techo (KTI); for Siem Reap and Angkor, start with BKK–Siem Reap Angkor (SAI). Confirm a flight for your dates before changing hotels or cancelling existing transport. For Thailand, start with KTI → BKK from Phnom Penh or SAI → BKK from Siem Reap.

1. Can You Cross the Land Border?

Cambodia’s Interior Ministry announced a suspension of all entry and exit at Cambodia–Thailand checkpoints on December 13, 2025, until further notice. Its December 15 clarification excludes air travel and borders with other countries. The Khmer-language Defence Ministry statement also distinguishes conflict-affected land and water crossings from air travel. A closed land crossing therefore does not, by itself, mean flights are suspended.

For individual routes, pay attention to what the announcement actually permits:

Before paying for an overland route, obtain confirmation from the border authorities on both sides that your checkpoint accepts foreign tourists on your travel date. Ask the operator which checkpoint it uses and what happens to your payment if entry is unavailable. A bus ticket or a promise of a “VIP crossing” is not permission to enter. UK and Australian travel advisories provide additional safety advice; checkpoint access is governed by Thai and Cambodian authorities.

2. Which Flight Replaces Your Land Route?

Choose the arrival city that matches your stay, rather than treating every Cambodia flight as interchangeable. The routes below are practical starting points for a flight search; availability and fares depend on your dates.

Enter your actual travel date, select the flight and check its airport codes before paying. If no suitable departure is available, compare adjacent dates before committing to hotels or onward transport.

If you are continuing to another Thai city, compare the complete itinerary, including the connection at BKK. Check whether the onward ticket departs from BKK or DMK, whether baggage must be collected and whether the tickets cover a missed connection. Confirm visa or visa-exemption eligibility for your passport before paying; non-Thai travelers entering Thailand also need TDAC as described below. Check each direction for its actual date.

Airport Details That Can Change Your Booking

Phnom Penh: select KTI. The Thai Airways route above uses Techo, not the old PNH code. Give the driver the airport code and flight number rather than just “Phnom Penh airport.”
Siem Reap: select SAI. This is Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. Use SAI for both the flight search and pickup arrangement.
Bangkok: BKK and DMK are different airports. The Bangkok airport used in both directions above is Suvarnabhumi, BKK. If another ticket arrives at Don Mueang, DMK, you need a ground transfer; it is not a same-airport connection.
Compare the complete cost. Include baggage, airport transfers, change fees and any extra hotel night. With separate tickets, check baggage collection, check-in deadlines and missed-connection terms before choosing a tight connection.

3. What to Change After Switching to a Flight

Confirm entry eligibility before paying. Check the visa or visa-exemption rules for your passport and the airport you will use. An arrival declaration does not replace a visa.
Match the arrival form to the new trip. For Cambodia, prepare Cambodia e-Arrival using your actual flight, arrival date and accommodation. For Thailand, non-Thai arrivals must complete TDAC within the three-day window before arrival; use “Update Arrival Card” before travel if an existing submission still contains the old itinerary.
Rebook the ground portions. Tell your hotel or driver the new airport and arrival time. Ask the original bus or car seller about cancellation or credit under your booking terms; a border closure does not itself establish your refund entitlement.
Check again before leaving. Verify the flight’s operation, passport and entry documents, baggage allowance and airport pickup. Do not travel to a closed checkpoint to look for an unofficial alternative.
