Lao eVisa is not accepted at every border crossing. The official Lao eVisa information page and FAQ currently list 9 designated eVisa ports, including three airports, three Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges, Boten road and rail entry points, and Khamsavath Railway Station.
TL;DR: Apply for Lao eVisa only if your route enters through a designated eVisa port. You do not have to enter through the exact port chosen in your application, but you must still use one of the designated eVisa ports. If your land route uses another checkpoint, confirm visa-on-arrival or embassy-visa options before paying, because the official FAQ says the eVisa fee is non-refundable.
Laos eVisa Port Decision Table
| Route type | Can Lao eVisa work? | What to check before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Flight to Vientiane, Luang Prabang, or Pakse | Usually yes, if the airport is listed below | Match the arrival airport with the official eVisa port list. |
| Land crossing from Thailand at listed Friendship Bridges | Yes for Bridges I, II, and IV | Check that your bus, train, or taxi route actually uses the listed bridge. |
| China-Laos route through Boten | Yes for Boten International Checkpoint or Boten Railway Station | Confirm whether your ticket uses the road checkpoint or railway station. |
| Train arrival at Khamsavath | Yes, if using Khamsavath Railway Station | Check the final station name on your ticket and arrival plan. |
| Any other land border | Do not assume eVisa is accepted | Check visa-on-arrival, embassy visa, or current border rules before payment. |

Do not shorten this into "Laos eVisa works at land borders." It works only at the designated eVisa ports.
If Your Application Port Changes
The official FAQ says you can enter at any eVisa designated port. That means a traveler who selected one designated port in the application may still enter through another designated eVisa port.
This does not mean every Lao border accepts eVisa. The same FAQ says that if you enter through an undesignated eVisa port, you are required to apply for a visa on arrival, and the eVisa fee is non-refundable.
Before changing plans, check:
- your approved eVisa is still valid for entry;
- your passport is the same passport used in the eVisa application;
- your new arrival point appears on the official designated-port list;
- your airline, railway operator, bus company, or border agent accepts your route and documents;
- you have time to solve a visa-on-arrival or embassy-visa issue if the route changes again.
Land Border Planning Mistakes
The common mistake is buying a bus or train ticket first, then assuming the eVisa will work at the crossing. For Laos, the exact border matters.
Avoid these mistakes:
- treating all Lao-Thai bridges as eVisa ports;
- confusing Boten road checkpoint with Boten railway station;
- assuming a private operator's "visa support" means eVisa is accepted at that crossing;
- paying for eVisa before checking whether your route enters at one of the 9 ports;
- relying on an old travel forum list instead of the current official Lao eVisa page.
If your route is flexible, choose the eVisa port first, then buy the flight, train, bus, or transfer that matches it.
When Visa on Arrival or Embassy Visa May Be Safer
If your planned checkpoint is not on the eVisa list, do not force the eVisa plan. Check whether visa on arrival is available for your nationality and that specific checkpoint, or whether you should get a visa from a Lao embassy before travel.
This is especially important for multi-country overland trips, where route changes can happen because of ticket availability, weather, bridge opening hours, local holidays, or transport delays.
